The Annual black-tie dinner was an energetic event at The Emirates Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester.

The event was held for the members of the Chamber and their guests in the northwest.

To represent Hawthorn Estates was Emily Millar, B&E Boys was John Boys, and Kevin Millar was the CIOB representative.

The beginning of the evening was a chance to network with the guests at a drinks and canapes reception sponsored by ABC+ Warranty & Architects Certificate.

Guest Speaker and Host was Rodger Johnson, BBC Northwest News anchor.

Charity for the evening was The Steve Burne Charitable Trust Supporting The Christie Charitable Fund.

 Event Speakers

The Greater Manchester Chamber Property & Construction Group Chair thanked the members for helping to keep the Chamber growing.

Three finalists were invited to enjoy the night events; there would be the revealing of who won the Apprentice of the Year 2022 and Building of the year 2022 awards.

The Chairman explained that this was the ninth  Apprentice of The Year award run by the Greater Manchester Chamber. In 2018 the award was renamed in memory of Steve Burne, the former vice president and chair of the property & construction group.

Five candidates were in the running for this year’s Building of the Year award.

The Guest Host -Roger Johnson

Mr Johnson has been involved with radio and broadcasting for over 25 years.

You may recognise him as the main presenter of the BBC Northwest Tonight and BBC Breakfast on weekends. Also an anchor for the BBC’s regional Children in Need coverage (south or northwest) since 1998.

He was named Royal Television Society Regional Sports Presenter of the Year in 2002  and has been nominated for other awards over his long career.

Rodger is a patron of Willowbrook Hospice in Prescot in Merseyside, England.

Roger gave a very enthusiastic and compelling segment for the evening.

A Steve Burne Apprentice of the Year Award 2022

2022 is the Ninth Apprentice of The Year Award by the Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Any current construction apprentice (technical or trade-based) in the Greater Manchester Area that can demonstrate strengths in all areas of the criteria set for the awards such as Motivation and drive, teamwork, going above and beyond, and how opportunities they faced impacted them personally are accepted as nominees for this award.

The two finalists arrived at the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket ground, unaware they had won the Apprentice of the year award. They did not have to wait long, as the award was announced after the chair Finished their address to the audience.

Here is a list of the three candidates:

  • Jennifer Wood from Bowmer+Kirkland
  • Conner Hueston from Kieran Hardman Gas, Plumbing and Heating.

There was such a high calibre of entrants that the judges had difficulty choosing the shortlisted candidates.

The building of the Year Award 2022

This award is to recognise the contributions a building has to Greater Manchester in terms of Construction and Development.

contributions could include:

  • The significance of the building to the city region,
  • Impact on the local economy,
  • effect on the local community,
  • terms of urban regeneration and environmental enhancement,
  • Excellence of design
  • contribution to urban design and townscape

Eagerly awaited the announcement is the Five finalists; here is a list of the three candidates:

  3. Castlefield Viaduct
  4. BASE
  5. The Science Engineering & Environment Building (SEE)

Each of the buildings contributes to Manchesters’ continued development.

The Winner of the Building of the Year 2022 was Energy House 2.0

The Chosen Charity

The selected charity for the evening was The Steve Burne Charitable Trust which supports The Christie Charitable Fund.

The Steve Burne Trust was created by Steve Burne as a legacy of his charitable fundraising during his life.

Mr Burne sadly died in 2018 due to a rare form of cancer at age 48; though this tragic time, Steve continued to fundraise for the charities in the area, and his family continued to work for the trust.

The Total amount raised on the night was over £700, which will go to the charity chosen by the Steve Burne Trust.

The Burne family wished that the Annual dinner’s charity is The Christie Fund, as it is one of Europe’s Leading Cancer Facilities. The Christie is known for many of the world-firsts that impact cancer treatments across the globe.
